The most important part of the eye examination is the evaluation of the health of your eyes. In order to have clear comfortable vision, your eyes have to be healthy. Drs. Cheezum and Miller utilize the latest computerized equipment to evaluate the health of your eyes and any eyeglass or contact lens prescription needs you may have. We see patients of all ages and check your eyes for glaucoma, cataracts and other eye diseases as well as looking for any eye problems that may be present if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or other systemic diseases.

Contact Lenses

Our office specializes in difficult contact lens cases including contact lenses for patients with keratoconus or who have had corneal transplant surgery. If you have been told in the past that you cannot wear contact lenses, let Dr. Cheezum or Dr. Miller evaluate you to see if you can wear them now. Our office has many of the new lens designs and materials available to it before most other practices in our area. We utilize the latest computerized equipment, along with our doctors' more than 35 years of combined experience, to see if you can wear contacts and maintain good vision, wearing comfort and eye health.

Macular Degeneration Management

Our office uses the latest technology to determine when a patient may benefit from treatment for macular degeneration. Our new Preview PHP Perimeter allows us to detect subtle changes in macular degeneration sooner which may help patients preserve a usable level of vision longer.

Low Vision

Patients who have macular degeneration or other eye diseases affecting their central vision may have their visual abilities improved with the use of various magnifying devices for distance and near viewing. Dr. Cheezum can evaluate patients with Low Vision to determine if these devices may improve their vision.

Optical Services

Our opticians have more than 35 years of experience and we are able to provide many customized optical services that other opticals cannot perform. The optical prices at Drs. Cheezum and Miller's office are, in many instances, equal to or better than those of the large optical chains and we are able to provide you with knowledgeable personalized service in a comfortable atmosphere. We carry hundreds of frames in our optical for children and adults, including many designer lines. We are also able to provide same day service for many prescriptions.

Refractive Surgery Consultation and Comanagement

Drs. Cheezum and Miller have worked with refractive surgery patients for many years. They are able to provide an unbiased evaluation of a patient’s suitability for refractive surgery and only work with surgeons who have extensive experience and consistent results with refractive surgery. After the surgery, Dr. Cheezum and Dr. Miller will monitor the recovery of your eyes to ensure that you have the best possible result.

Laser vision correction is not suitable for everyone and there are some possible side effects from the surgery, which may cause a person to have some problems. Our doctors will thoroughly evaluate your eyes and explain all aspects of the surgery and recovery period to you so that you may make an educated well-informed decision about having the procedure.

New Technology and Your Eye Health

Our doctors in the use of the latest technology to assist them in the assessment of the health of your eyes. New computerized instruments provide more accurate information to evaluate your ocular health and formulate long term treatment plans for various diseases such as diabetes and glaucoma. The more information we have available to us during your examination, the more accurately we can evaluate your eye health and vision correction needs. Some examples of the computerized technology we use in the office are:

Computerized Refractor and Keratometer-
This helps analyze the refractive state of the eye as well as the general shape of the front surface of the eye, which is very important in your ability to see clearly.

Retinal Photography-
This allows us to monitor the progression of any internal eye disease which may affect your vision by taking a photograph of the retina and using these images at future visits to look for any changes which may have occurred over time. These diseases include glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and macular degeneration.

Corneal Topography-
This is used for a very detailed evaluation of the front surface of the eye by utilizing a computer to measure the shape of thousands of spots on the cornea. This is vital for patients interested in refractive surgery and Orthokeratology as well as for patients who wear or are interested in contact lenses. Topography allows us to learn things about the cornea which may affect your vision but are invisible to the human eye even with the high powered microscopes we use to evaluate eye health.

Computerized Visual Fields-
This is used to evaluate the ability of the retina to function properly so that a person may see well. If the retina is unhealthy, you will not see well even with the most up to date eyeglass or contact lens prescription. Use of the visual fields instrument is vital for patients who have glaucoma, to monitor the effectiveness of their treatment, as well as for patients who may have brain tumors or other neurological problems.

Laser Nerve Fiber Layer Analysis-
The Heidelberg Spectralis Optical Coherence Tomographer utilizes laster technology to evaluate the health of the retina in the back of the eye. If retinal nerve fibers are damaged by glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension or other diseases affecting the eyes, vision loss occurs. This technology allows us to detect retinal diseases at an eariler stage and provide appropriate therapies, when possible.

Treatment of Eye Disease, Infections, and Injuries

Our doctors are happy to see patients for eye emergencies. Please call during office hours at  757-549-2225 or use the emergency pager 757-572-9547 on nights or weekends to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. After they evaluates the extent of the injury or infection, they will formulate a treatment plan and explain it to you. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.

Computer Vision

Prolonged daily use of computers may cause significant eye strain and discomfort. Many computer users have problems with dry scratchy eyes and trouble maintaining a clear focus for their computer work. We are able to evaluate your computer related eye problems and provide solutions for your problems which will help you be more comfortable while working with your computer. These solutions may range from something as simple as taking a break periodically and blinking more often to specialized computer eyeglass prescriptions. Discuss your computer related problems with Dr. Cheezum or Dr. Miller during your eye examination.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes

Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.

Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

Insurance Plans

We are providers for Eyemed Vision, Davis Vision and Vision Service Plan for routine eye care. For patients with medical eye problems, such as diabetes, glaucoma or cataracts, we are also a provider for Medicare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optima, Cigna, Aetna and other major medical plans. Please tell our receptionist which plan you have when you call to make your appointment so we are able to assure that you are able to use your benefits to their fullest extent when you have your examination.
